Riverhead ride 2

I took the group out to Riverhead this morning, number 1 son came on my Dawg as he has now split the seat post on the AC. It is so bad I cannot remove it from the frame. A new photo when I can get it out. There was 8 of us today including a couple of newbies.

I first took them up Barlow Rd and down a nice bit of flowy single track back to start. This section of forest was lopped about 5 years ago and the new growth pines are just starting to come through.

Next it was back up Barlow Rd to the top, nice climb on the SS, glad I have stuck to 32:18. Down Patterson Rd there are 2 nice bits of sweet Riverhead single track, clay covered off camber rooty corners, rutty and specially for today dusty... Just magic.

After that it was up the big hill (big by Auckland standards), affectionately known by us as Christ Hill, I made it up on the SS this time though was sucking some seriuos air at the top. We picked up a rider from another group, who wanted to head back the carpack and was un-sre of the way, her group we riding on. I asked about her techinical ability as our next track was a bit a techinical, steep - overgrown, rooty down hill, turns out she won the first of thr R n R series XC races the day before, so I dont think her ability was going to hold us back....

Down nature trail to the carpark... The photos do not do the steapness justice....

Not bad photos conisdering these were from my new phone.

Superchunk

Superchunk have been in my top 10 favourite bands of all time list since the day I bought their "No pocky for kitty" LP when it was released in 91/92. It still remains one of my favourite LP's, though I only have it on vinyl which is frustrating.

I had 5 of their albums, 2 on vinyl and 3 on CD and yesterday I bought 3 more, "Superchunk", "Here's where the strings come in" and "Cup of sand". On first listen Cp of sand is disappointing, it will need a good thrash in car at a respectable volume I guess. I was looking for "no pocky" but the store didn't have it.

I have seen them both times they have been in Auckland, and they were great live, and Laura is babe-licious, which always makes a concert better!

Riverhead ride

I had my first ride at Riverhead forest for the summer yesterday. Riverhead is clay based and very rooty, so it is not a huge amount of fun to ride in in the winter, especially on the steep off camber downhills, it can be like ice, but after a dry summer it is magic. Quite technical in parts and a lot more tricky on the SS compared to a fully suspended bike.

The forest is a working pine forest and over the past 5 years there has been a lot of felling so most of the old school tracks have disappeared, which is why I have not been riding there much. I do enjoy it every time I go though as it is much more my style of riding, no stunts to play on just riding.

I will take the camera next time and get some snaps. I do not think I have ever taken pictures there.

Broken Spring

Number 1 son has done this to the AC, I am assuming this happened when he smashed the rear wheel.

Looking at the spring it looks like it has had a crack in it for a while, but was a 500 pund spring. Luckily a friend had an old 1 he wasnt using.

Jump rope

A while ago I found a jump rope in the sleep out and have been meaning to add it to my basic 'gym' routine.

My gym routine is quite simple, I have very basic bit of equipment and a recently borrowed punch bag, I do a couple of reps when I remember and I will say it has made a difference to my fitness.

I finally remembered tonight and gave a round of jump rope a go. Man - is it hard, I am reasonably fit, I can run a half marathon (slowly) I can ride a single speed round in circles and have done a couple of endurance rides. I managed about 100 jumps, with 60 being the most I could complete in a set without hitting the ground/my foot etc.

This is going to be a fun new challeng

Dinosaur Jr are coming to town !!!

Yes I am excited. I have purchased tickets to see the original (but older, much much older) line up of Dinosaur Jr playing a one off concert in Auckland. Unfortunately it is on a Monday night, but I can live with that.

I last saw them around 89/90 when they came here and they were fab.

They have been in my top 10 bands of all time list for a long long time so I am taking my self out of gig going retirement again.

Hog run again

Posted a reasonable time in the Hog 5k'er last night. I was happy with 22:24, under 4 half minute Km's which I am always happy with.

It was another hot night, 24-25 degrees. I arrived later than I wanted so I did not get a warm up in, plus I was a wee bit stressed from thinking that it would be quicker to drive down, not knowing there waa serious roadworks on Fanshaw St.

I was happy though.

Nice run

I am feeling pretty good at the moment. My exercise routine has been pretty good with a mix of light 'gym' work, running, walking, cycling and the odd hit out at tennis with my wife. My diet has been reasonable, with the odd day off for a birthday party where I have consumed lots of cake. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM cake. I am down to 78 KG's which I am happy with, though there is still some 'unproductive' body mass to get ride of. I do have a couple of bottles of whiskey to dispose of, courtesy of my mother in law, who is over from Australia, but at the moment I do not feel the need to have a whiskey and music session so it is all good.

Bought a 1.97 CD on the weekend - Mark of Cain - Aussie band, it is actually pretty good, I will have to check out the bargain bins at the Warehouse again. Been listening to more hardcore again, someone sent me Bad Brains greatest hits and it is awesome, I was never a big fan of Bad Brains when they were around, but this CD is great. Today I am listening to Ringworm...

Had a good run on Sunday morning, about 13k, ran up through Titirangi and along Exhibition drive and back home. It was very very hot, I drank 3 drink bottles of water in the next couple of hours. the run flowed quite well and I got 'in the zone' fairly soon which was great. I am going to do the Hog run tonight as well.

Riding with flats

Last Monday I went riding along the waterfront on the single speed with my wife and a friend. As it was slow meander I put flat pedals on the bike.

One of my riding buddies who rides flat all the time had bought a new Giant Reign so for me to have a ride I needed to have flat as well. So today I strapped on the the shin pads I won and thought I would try a ride with flat pedals.

It was not really that much fun. I had trouble on the jumps as my feet kept bouncing off, the climbs were tougher than riding with clips, and the final run down SPCA was awkward as well as I was bouncing all over the place, plus I was still running 32:18 which was just no fun on the down hills.

The Reign was not too bad to ride either, felt different riding a fully suspended bike though....

24 hours of N-duro

Number 1 son and I left Auckland at 6.45 AM and went down to Rotorua for the 24 hours of N-Duro. The weather was not too bad and I was pumped and really looking forward to the riding.

I was in a supposedly 5 man single speed team in the open category, but there end up being only 4 of us to add to the challenge of racing against fully geared teams. Number 1 son was in a mixed team of complete strangers from Wellington.

We stopped at Macca’s for a bacon and egg McMuffin power breakfast and then drove the 2 half hours to Rotorua, had a good trip down, little traffic and what there was was moving at a decent pace.

We arrived on site as expected around 10.00 AM, I was surprised at how small the event ‘village’ was. There must have only been about 40 teams at the most. This event is definitely aimed at mountain bikers, unlike the Moonride and Day Night Thriller 12 hour events which attract huge amounts of teams and are more aimed at participation. Our team was not overly serious though we are all experienced mountain bikers. We were racing under the Essence Bicycles team.

The event started on time at 12.00 I took the first lap. We started with a Le Mans start of a 500m run to the bike, then a 500m climb up a sealed road before hitting a steep 4 wheel drive track into the forest. The tracks were bit of Baur, road, A Trail, road, Tickler, Be Rude Not 2, bit of road, Lion, bit more road, bit more Baur, bit more road, Exit trail. All up the course was 12k, mostly sweet sweet Rotorua single track, with a bit of metal road linking he tracks. There was a fair amount of climbing which I hated on the single speed as I am not a great climber, even though the climbs were short they were steep. In some cases I was loosing traction and ended up walking them on most laps.

The first lap was very hot and I think I got quite dehydrated, it took me 55 minutes. I lost my chain at the bottom of the exit trail. The second lap at 2.00 and took about an hour, I think as a result of the dehydration - it also started to drizzle, which made the pinch climbs on Lion quite greasy. The second lap I had somehow lost a cleat screw so I had a lot of fun was slipping cleats, and when I lost traction a couple of times I could not get my foot out so ended up falling over, removing my shoe, tightening the cleat screw and riding off, this happened 3 times, which did not help my lap time.

I then had a 5 hour break until my next lap at 7.30 PM, spent some time sifting around the site, chatting to people. Sent number 1 son out on his first lap which he enjoyed, especially the exit trail down hill.

The 7.30 PM lap was a goodie, no mechanicals, though it did get quite dim at the end and I only maintained speed down the exit trail by following someone who obviously knew where they were going, I think this was my fastest lap of the event but I haven’t seen the lap times yet .

The 9.30 PM lap was my first, and as it turned out, only lap in the dark. I found it quite hard to flow the trails under lights and maintaining a rhythm was very difficult, which does make life on a single speed hard. It rained lightly for most of the lap. The ride after me copped a solid 1 hour downpour of rain and our next rider had only been on the course for 15 minutes when the organisers closed the event down till 6.00 Am for safety reasons. There had been a couple of injuries and the A trail had turned into a river and was quite dangerous. The riders on the trail were grabbed at the half way check point and sent down the road.
Number 1 son and I had planned on sleeping in the marquee, but the rain had made that impossible so we ‘slept’ in the car. He slept OKish, but I had the steering wheel side. We both woke up with sore knees.

As the weather had improved the race re-opened at 6.00 AM, with the A Trail being removed and a small climb up to the Katore jumps trail being added. I had an 8.00 AM ride, The tracks had dried out amazingly well, the drainage in Rotorua is fantastic. The tracks were fast and sticky, with only the horrible climbs on Lion being too slippery for me to get up. I passed 6 riders on this, my final lap.

All up we came 8 out of 12 in the men’s 5 man team competition, even though we only had 4 and we were the only single speed team.

It was a good event, though we did not stay for the prize giving, but drove straight home.

I will have another go at a 24 hour team event.
